Meanwhile Monarch has also welcomed the new Gibraltar airport terminal which they said will lead to "an enhanced travel experience."

According to the airline, the additional flight will operate each Sunday between September 12 and October 31 2010 and will bring the total number of flights operated by the airline from Gibraltar to Manchester to four per week.

An airline spokesman said: "The extra flights are available to book now via Monarch | Cheap Flights, Holidays & Hotels with fares, including taxes, starting from just £55.50 one way (£96.50 return)."

Commenting on the additional service, Tim Jeans, Managing Director of Monarch's scheduled services, said: "We have seen huge demand for seats between Gibraltar and Manchester this summer and as a result have introduced this additional service meaning an extra 3,000 seats will be available. Over 60,000 people have already booked their flights on the route this summer and the extra services will mean an even greater choice of low fare flights.

"We are very excited to be expanding our services from Gibraltar as a new terminal at the airport, which opens next summer, will see better facilities for customers and an enhanced travel experience.

"Monarch operates scheduled flights from Gibraltar to London Luton and Manchester airports. In addition to year-round low fares, Monarch also offers a range of tasty hot and cold meals that can be pre-booked or purchased onboard with prices from £3.00. To enable customers to select where in the cabin they sit and ensure that families and groups sit together, seats can be pre-booked from £7.50 per one-way flight, or from only £17.50, extra-legroom seats are available, which offer up to six inches of extra space.

"Passengers travelling on scheduled flights can also avoid the queues at the airport and take advantage of online check-in which is available between seven days and 4.5 hours prior to departure."

Das neue Terminal in Gibraltar (GIB) nimmt Gestalt an. Probleme mit dem spanischen Nachbar wg. Zugang von ES-Seite.

'The new terminal now taking shape as Government opens tenders for businesses to set up.

Gibraltar Government company Gibraltar Air Terminal Limited has announced that it is inviting bids from interested parties to operate concessions within the Departure Lounge of the New Air Terminal at Gibraltar International Airport.

And the Chronicle understands that a new local CEO from the tourism linked sector charged with the terminal’s management will be named shortly.

A Ministry of Enterprise, Development, Technology and Transport statement said that Gibraltar International Airport is undergoing significant investment and infrastructure improvement and the New Terminal will be commissioned in Spring 2011.

“The New Terminal will provide its users with excellent facilities and the Departure Lounge will house a quality shopping and waiting area with amenities and catering facilities. The design and layout is in keeping with standards seen at other modern international airports and the furniture and fittings are being selected from fitters experienced in serving the airport industry.”

A total of ten units are currently available for tender and these range in size from the smallest at 20m2 to the largest at 57 m2. The closing date for the receipt of tender bids is noon on Friday 26 November.

The Minister for Transport, Joe Holliday, said he is encouraging bids from interested parties into what Government believes to be an exciting business opportunity.

“The New Terminal has been designed and is being built to the highest standards and will offer a much improved shopping opportunity for passengers using the Airport. The new premises are much better located for attracting trade and are significantly larger than the existing shops in the present Terminal, thus allowing retailers the opportunity to better present their goods,” he said.'

UK hands over Aviation Security to Gib Government
Release Date :09-11-2010
Validity Date :16-11-2010

The UK has agreed to hand over responsibility for Aviation Security to the Gibraltar Government. It follows the introduction of new EU regulations.

The Minister responsible for Transport will be directly responsible for Aviation Security.

Local legislation to enforce the EU regulations is being drafted and this will establish a new position of Civil Aviation Security Regulator, a role which will be undertaken by the Director of Civil Aviation.

The Regulator will be provided with specialist aviation security advice from TRANSEC in accordance with an agreement currently under discussion with the UK Department for Transport.

A new Gibraltar civil aviation security programme and a security quality control programme, as required by the new EU regulations, is being drafted.

At the same time the airport is reviewing its security programme to ensure it complies with the new EU regulations.

The new regulations seek to protect persons and goods within the European Union from acts of unlawful interference with civil aircraft that jeopardize the security of civil aviation. The objective is to set common rules and common basic standards on aviation security.

In addition mechanisms will be introduced for monitoring compliance with the new regulations.

It replaces previous regulations adopted as a result of the 11 September 2001 events in the USA, which included a Gibraltar suspension clause and thus was not applicable in Gibraltar.

However, regardless of this fact, Gibraltar airport has always striven to meet the declared European standards, taking into account the limitations imposed by the joint military and civil use of the airfield and the unique situation at the airport, with a runway crossing a public highway.

To that end the Gibraltar government has long maintained a contract with TRANSEC (the Transport Security Division of the UK Department for Transport) to provide advice and assessment of the security procedures applicable at Gibraltar airport.

Welcome to Gibraltar Holiday

The new GIB air terminal building is being prepared for departures as well as arrivals since practical completion was given at the end of April. Work now continues to resolve the long list of snagging problems that have been identified once possession of the New Air Terminal was achieved. Additionally work continues to fully integrate and configure the extensive IT systems present in the New Air Terminal.

The next phase will see staff being trained on the new systems and then full operations will be able to commence from the New Air Terminal. It will therefore open for this purpose as soon as it is ready. By way of example, the Government has been told that the CUTE check-in system was expected to be ready by mid-July and that following this the handler’s staff needs to be trained on it.
