Delta wird ab Oktober 2010 neu die Strecke Detroit - Sao Paulo zweimal die Woche befliegen. Flugzeit 10.5 Stunden.

'Delta Air Lines will fly twice a week nonstop between Detroit and Sao Paulo, Brazil, starting Oct. 21. It's the first nonstop from Detroit Metro Airport to South America -- or any city south of the equator.

The route was approved Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Transportation; the move shows that Delta is pouring more resources into its Detroit hub, second only to Atlanta.

Because Detroit has many nonstops to the Far East over the quick polar route, it is a logical transfer point for travelers from Asia to South America or vice-versa, said airport spokesman Michael Conway.

"The airport authority sees terrific possibilities to be a key transfer point between two continents," he said.

Delta flight 205 is to leave Detroit at 5:45 p.m. on Thursdays and Sundays, arriving in Sao Paulo 10 1/2 hours later.

Flight 204 is to leave Sao Paulo at 10:15 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays, arriving in Detroit 11 hours later.'
