Carnival 2012
For many carnival fans the so-called fifth season already started with Hoppeditz’ awakening. Traditionally, the carnival season is rung in on 11 November at 11.11am.
However, the big starting signal of the annual fun takes place on Altweiberfastnacht. On that day, the female inhabitants of the town storm the town hall of Dusseldorf and start the street carnival in the old town of Dusseldorf. For gentlemen special caution is needed on that day: in the Rhineland it is usual that ladies cut men’s ties.
Since 2006, when the children’s carnival parade took place for the first time, it has been established in the Dusseldorf carnival. On Carnival Saturday, young and old carnival revelers march together through the city centre.
On Carnival Sunday begins the big kick-off. Already in the morning, one meets at the Königsallee for the so-called rehearsal. It is swaying, celebrated and marveled. Dusseldorf’s largest polonaise along the Königsallee is worth visiting.
On Carnival Monday, finally the famous Rose Monday Parade takes place. A huge procession of decorated carnival floats runs through the entire city. Thereby quantities of candies and confetti are thrown into the celebrating crowd. The parade has a length of 5-6 kilometers and consists of about 70 wagons. When the procession winds its way through the narrow streets of the old town, it even reaches twice the length. On this day, about one million visitors are standing in the roadside to admire the festival.
