"From BA intranet:

Up to 800 people could lose their jobs at bmi in a £100 million cost-saving plan that will slash capacity by a quarter.

The measures, announced this week by Bmi's owner Lufthansa, will also see the return of the carrier's former name, British Midland International.

The name was ditched in 2001 in an attempt to appeal more broadly to international passengers. But Lufthansa believes it is a strong brand that will be attractive to foreigners.

Chief executive Wolfgang Prock-Schauer said: "In the UK the name bmi was fine, but in a foreign market like the Middle East nobody knew what it meant. ‘British’ stands for quality and I think people will want to fly on a British airline."

BMI suffered a £155.6 million pound loss in 2008 and the forecasting for 2009 is slightly worse, according to Prock-Schauer. It is hoped that the cuts will return the airline to profitability.

"Our ambition is to become a second home carrier for the UK market. We can create a virtual network at Heathrow with our alliance airlines and that process will intensify."
